Why a waste factor matters
Actual flooring installation almost always uses more material than the bare room area, due to cuts around edges, closets, and doorways, pattern matching, and occasional damaged pieces. The waste factor inflates the raw area before dividing by box coverage, so the box count rounds up to a realistic purchase quantity rather than leaving you short mid-installation.
Frequently asked questions
Why would I need a higher waste factor than 10%? Diagonal installation patterns, herringbone layouts, rooms with lots of corners/closets, or first-time DIY installation (more mis-cuts) typically call for 15–20% waste instead of the standard 10%.
Should I buy exactly the calculated number of boxes? It's generally wise to round up to the next full box (which this calculator already does) and consider keeping one extra box for future repairs, since matching flooring lots/dye batches later can be difficult.
Does box coverage vary a lot between products? Yes — check the specific product's packaging, since coverage per box varies by plank/tile size and brand; using the wrong coverage figure will throw off the final box count.
